Walk or Run

individually or as a team of 3*

Starting at Top Barn Activity Centre
Holt Heath, Worcester, WR6 6NH

* In a relay style, ie 3 sections of approximately 16-18 miles

Sunny, humid, torrential downpours, high winds; the Malvern Hills Ultra had
it all in 2010. A race of some 52 miles, open to runners, walkers and relay
teams is back by popular demand!

The Route
The Malvern Hills Ultra Challenge is a test of endurance with some navigational skill. The
total ascent is over 4,000 ft. The race is open to walkers and runners and relay teams of 3
people, with trophy’s for various categories.

The race starts at Top Barn Activity Centre, Holt Heath, Worcester, WR6 6NH, either at
6am for walkers and 9am for runners (check in prior to these times). From the Activity
Centre the 52 mile track leads you onto the Severn Way which takes you through Grimley
and onto a lovely meandering path along the River Severn. Through Worcester and onto
Upton on Severn the route moves across to the foot of the Malvern Hills. At this point
competitors will have already done a marathon distance and will be faced with the
daunting yet beautifully spectacular scenery of the Malvern Hills. This is the most
challenging part of the course but also the most rewarding as competitors experience
some breathtaking views. Conquering the Worcestershire Beacon the route touches the
River Teme before heading directly home to Holt Castle.

Food for the 2010 race finish was soup, various pasta meals, unlimited drinks hot and
cold, and ‘For Goodness Shakes’ drinks, the 2011 race will be on a similar basis. Check
points will have unlimited water and some nutrition. Under no circumstances is litter to
be left along the route.

Only finishers get a medal and t-shirt. For a finishing team, each member of the team will
get a t-shirt and medal. But, if any member of a team successfully completes their section
and any of their other team members do not, effectively the ‘team’ has failed and non of
the members get anything because their ‘team’ has failed… you have been told!

As you can see some participants needed night navigational skills!

2010 individual winners were Bruce Moore (9:20hrs) for the men’s category and Alice Maiden (11:15hrs) in the
ladies.
Are you mad enough to do this challenge?
Here are some good reasons why you should join us
St. Richard’s Hospice needs you to raise as much sponsorship as you can. Every penny
really does count! Thanks to your generosity, your sponsorship will help us fund a wide
range of services for our 2,100 patients and their families, making St. Richard’s Hospice
such a welcoming and supportive place for all concerned.

Sunny, humid, torrential downpours, high winds; the Malvern Hills Ultra had it all on Saturday the 1st May. A race of some 52 miles, open to runners, walkers and relay teams.A sunny start to the day saw the competitors lining up at Top Barn Activity Centre in shorts and lightweight tops. With an initial online entry of ninety four racers this was set to be an excellent first year for the event. With the starting horn the runners were directed to a full lap of the Activity Centre Lake before heading down the River Severn towards Worcester.By Check-Point One (the Diglis House Hotel), only thirty minutes separated the pack. At Check-Point Two in Severn Stoke, race leader Bruce Moore was consistently holding his lead, but both Gareth Hardman and James Dowdall were in threatening positions. Alice Maiden was leading the ladies race and appeared very comfortable. The race leaders and chasing pack remained steady through Check-Point Three (The Malvern Hills Hotel), and Check-Point Four (The New Inn at Storridge). At this point the race was spread by over three hours, with both the distance covered and the Malvern Hills taking its toll on all competitors. After scaling Ankerdine Hill and reaching CP5, Bruce Moore, the local Worcestershire hero who openly admitted this was his first ultra, was still leading. Yet Gareth Hardman was still in contention even though he had a few navigational issues and had to back-track to get his dropped map.

By the end of the race there would be several hours separating the first and last racers. Bruce crossed the finishing line in an impressive nine hours twenty minutes and quickly beckoned his supporting wife to drive him to McDonalds, ignoring the nutritional soup and pasta on offer by Ultra Running. Thirty Seven minutes later Gareth Hardman completed his race, obviously disappointed with his unfortunate lost time but nevertheless another ultra in the bag.

James Dowdall turned in a third place with a time of ten hours sixteen minutes and a cool relaxed looking Alice Maiden, also from Worcestershire, crossed the line in eleven hours fifteen minutes to gain the ladies title.

The helicopter pilots known as ‘The Also Rans’; Kevin Reagan, Jamie Kinniburgh, Ian McTeer, Simon Hammock, Gary Bell and Harvey Gaskill won the Team Relay title with an overall time of nine hours fifteen minutes.

The full distance Team Winners were Andrew Vulliamy, Adam Anstey and Chris Dent.
Peter Little showed that age was no barrier rolling in at joint forth to claim the Veterans title in exactly eleven hours.

Just as much acclaim though goes to all other finishers who battled the dark woods of Ockeridge in torrential rain and wind. Sisters Jane Andrews and Kate Freeman crossed the finishing line in just over nineteen hours having taking up the challenge of walking the course.
